Leandro Erlich conceived the first version of Window and Ladder for a biennial in New Orleans that took place after Hurricane Katrina. Struck by the presence of the absence, he imagined an impossible situation: a ladder leaning against a window from the remaining parts of a house, floating in the air. He intended to commemorate a loss.
Beyond the circumstances, Window and Ladder is a reflection about a double impossibility, at the time contradictory and vital: if human being can’t resist some dramatic situations, yet he resists them.Window and Ladder tells also the story of Romeo and Juliette…

Leandro Erlich a créé la première version de Window and Ladder pour la biennale de la Nouvelle Orléans, juste après le passage de l’ouragan Katrina. Frappé par la présence de l’absence, il a imaginé une situation impossible : une échelle appuyée contre une fenêtre, flottant dans les airs, seul morceau restant d’une maison détruite. Il s’agissait d’inscrire la perte dans notre mémoire.
Au-delà des circonstances, Window and Ladder est une réflexion sur une double impossibilité à la fois contradictoire et dynamique : si l’être humain ne peut résister à certaines situations dramatiques, il y résiste cependant.
